What is insulated glass?

An insulated glass unit (IGU) is a factory-sealed assembly of two or three panes separated by spacers and insulating cavities. Double-pane glass balances cost, weight and efficiency; triple-pane glass further reduces heat loss and keeps interior glass surfaces warmer. The final build-up must match the aluminum system, element size, wind load, sound, solar and safety requirements. Vacuum Glass: High Insulation in a Slim Build-Up.

Between two glass panes there is an almost air-empty intermediate space. Because gas line and convection are greatly reduced, the construction achieves very good thermal insulation at low overall thickness.
